Chapter 1: Modern Frontend Architectures (React, Next.js, and Styling Frameworks)

1.1 The Evolution of Client-Side Rendering vs Server-Side Rendering

Modern web development has undergone a paradigm shift. In the early days of the web, applications were mostly server-rendered, with backend platforms generating HTML dynamically and sending it down to the client. This approach was simple but lacked user responsiveness. The rise of Single Page Applications (SPAs) fueled by frameworks like AngularJS, React, and Vue.js shifted the rendering process entirely to the browser. Under this Client-Side Rendering (CSR) model, the server sends a minimal HTML shell accompanied by a massive bundle of JavaScript. The browser then executes the JavaScript to build the DOM, fetch data from APIs, and make the page interactive. While CSR provided desktop-like responsiveness during page transitions, it introduced significant challenges, notably slow initial load times, high Time to Interactive (TTI), and poor search engine optimization (SEO) capabilities because search engine web crawlers struggled to parse JavaScript-reliant client templates.

To overcome these limitations, Hybrid Architectures emerged. Next.js pioneered the synthesis of Server-Side Rendering (SSR) and Static Site Generation (SSG) with client-side interactivity, known as Hydration. In a hydrated application, the server compiles the React component tree into a static HTML string.
